There are brands without such ethical stances as BAM Clothing (as mentioned in previous blog post) such as designer British brand Burberry, who were burning their own stock (Parliament 2019) to prevent the items from being sold cheaply to devaluate the brand and protect the high prices of their upmarketbrand. This shocked me massively because I would have thought all that hard workmanship and materials should be treasured, stored and sold.
Lu Yen Roloff from Greenpeace agreed, "Despite their high prices, Burberry shows no respect for their own products and the hard work and natural resources that are used to made them," (BBC News 2018)
Principle Lecturer at Manchester Metropolitan University, Maria Malone says that destroying unwanted products is part of the process, stating;
“The reason they are doing this is so that the market is not flooded with discounts, they don’t want Burberry products to get into the hands of anyone who can sell them at discount and devalue the brand.” However, I disagree, questioning why weren’t Burberry just controlling how much was made or storing the products until they can be sold elsewhere.
